In the African-American community, our male youth are faced with many challenges that they must overcome in order to become productive citizens. UUNIK academy, Inc. is rites of passage program that is dedicated to transforming African-American youth into respectful and respectable African-American adults.
UUNIK ('unique') Academy founded in September 2003, meets every Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Our youth, ages 10-17, have activities which include academics, leadership and life skill enrichment. We provide transportation as well as meals for our participants.
UUNIK is an acronym that encompasses 5 of the 7 principles of Kwanzaa (Nguzo Saba): Umoja - Unity, Ujaama - Collective economics, Nia - Purpose, Imani - Faith, and Kujichagulia - Self Determination.
Our mission is to implement principles that will transform youth into respectful and responsible adults. We will create an environment conducive to developing life skills, a strong sense of leadership and community amongst UUNIK participants.
UUNIK Academy will become a full time after school institution dedicated to the holistic development of African-American youth within the state of TN. We also envision an institution that produces future leaders and productive citizens who will make a powerful impact in the world.
